Outside the marginals

a commentary on the politics that followed the UK 2010 & 2015 elections

Twittering over Gibraltar

After making a bid to ease tensions over the telephone, Mr Cameron said on Twitter: “Constructive call with Spain’s PM Rajoy. I made clear my concerns re Gibraltar and that our position on sovereignty won’t change”.
BBC News Website 7 August 2013: PM has ‘constructive’ call with Spain over Gibraltar

Is it just me or is there something wrong about our PM thinking that he has to witter about this issue – and reduce a complex issue to 140 characters?

He really ought to have better things to do than be logged on to twitter – he’s the Prime Minister for goodness sake! Has he too much time on his hands?

If he wants to say something it should be carefully considered and then announced to the House of Commons or if the house is not sitting put out as a press release – using as many characters as necessary.

If he feels that on this issue (unlike others) transparency and urgency is important (why?  is it a dog-whistle issue with the Tory heartlands?) he can put the press release straight onto the No 10 website. Then, if he wants to, get an underling to put out a brief twitter drawing attention to the press release.

Otherwise I look forward to a witter about him asking Cleggy to get him a cup of tea, and Pickles to get him a pastie.

Exchange with DPM about tea. Made clear desire for Earl Grey. Made clear to Pickles that our position on cheese in pasties won’t change.
