Outside the marginals

a commentary on the politics that followed the UK 2010 & 2015 elections

What makes you a Socialist!!??

… on the Today programme on BBC Radio 4, the Labour leader made clear that he is ready to fix prices in other markets: “If competition fails, and if there is evidence it has failed in particular markets, should the regulator act? And if the regulator fails, as has happened in this market, should government act? Absolutely.”

His opponents will say – and are saying already – that this is a shift to the left, an old fashioned Labour reliance on the state to solve all ills.

Well, let’s try the alternative.

“If competition fails, and if there is evidence it has failed in particular markets, should the regulator act?”

No of course not – let monopolistic companies continue to exploit a rigged market.

“And if the regulator fails, as has happened in this market, should government act?”

No of course not – let monopolistic companies continue to exploit a rigged market.

I would suggest that agreeing to this alternative makes you a “swivel-eyed loon” or an apologist for the energy industry.

So, if you are not a swivel-eyed loon, does that make you a Socialist?

I don’t think so; a willingness to do something about rigged markets should be common to all but the most rabid “free marketeers”. Even free-marketeers might care to check their “little blue books” for a definition of a “free market” before siding with the energy market’s guardian angel.
