Gideon’s Dictionary: Powerhouse

Every emperor, or prospective emperor, has to give the appearance of having “the common touch”. In view of the restricted background of our potential new emperor, I offer him a dictionary in the hope that studying it will help him understand the people he wishes to rule.

Powerhouse

  1. (n) Source of energy and strength. As in The Northern Powerhouse by combining the strengths of the great northern cities will have the capability to challenge the strength of London, rebalance the country and reduce the economic dependence of the North on the rest of the country.
  2. (n – portmanteau) A collective heading for a series of disconnected initiatives; e.g. Northern Powerhouse (mainly centred on Manchester) – intended to give the appearance of concerted action.
  3. (n – political) A smokescreen term used to introduce unpopular initiatives (e.g. Mayoral Government – see Democracy) for party political gain.
